What is a listening walk? It is when we go outside and try to be aware of the sounds around us! The sounds can change with the seasons, the time of day... Check out this fantastic book about going on a listening walk! Some fantastic connections I have on social media have shared some birds to listen for in the spring! Thanks so much to Heather Hinam of Second Nature MB, and Terri Willard of the Seven Oaks Met School for their help! First, I learned last week that the chickadee call (chickadee-dee-dee) that we hear all winter actually CHANGES in the spring! I thought that was a totally new bird that arrives in the spring! ... Although now that I look at the Bird-Sounds.net site, it seems like what I'm calling the winter sound is the 'call' and what I'm calling the spring sound is the 'song'! So much to learn... Then there is one of my FAVOURITE bird songs, which is that of the White-Throated Sparrow! So glad this was shared with me as I didn't know who I was hearing!! Others I was told to check out are:
Merlin, Purple Finches, Nuthatches, Blue Jays, House Sparrows, Geese, Crows, Ravens... and I see Eagles all the time while teaching! |
