Sit back for story time with Mme Jennifer, and some classes from past years!
Last year, grade 2 classes made music and sound effects for the story "Voici l'hiver!" Here is the video from Mme Fontaine's class! You can hear music themes they created, plus sound effects for different actions in the story!
That took quite a while, and a lot of learning about music themes from movies, and how music can change a film. For example, look at the results of last week's music experience, where I offered the chance to pick different music themes for the dancing green guy! Here were some choices you made!! So fun!
Then there are the sound effects, which is called Foley Art, after Jack Foley.... they use Foley Art to make the sounds in movies, just like they did with old radio plays. Check out what that would have looked like with the play "It's a Wonderful Life" that was at Manitoba Theatre Centre last year:
Adding in the music can take a long time, especially if it was composed for a film, and needs to be recorded and played to match the action on the screen, as can be seen here with Frozen:
It is so cool that the Grade 2s learned all about all these elements that go into making music for a movie, and without music, it wouldn't be the same! Try playing Star Wars with different music... it's just not the same!
Actually now it makes it a lot like Guardians of the Galaxy :-)
Here is another video students made, this time, doing shadow puppetry (because Grade 4s also study light in science! Integrating subjects is awesome as everything is connected in the world, really :-). Thank you SOOO much to Ingrid Pedersen, as she created the puppets from the story we picked, and knew how to do do all the shadow puppetry, with giving everyone a chance to have a special part! This was part of our spring concert in 2018, which was all about legends from around the world:
What story will you use to add sounds? Here are some great ones:
From Robert Munsch: Mmm Cookies, Mortimer, Up Up Down Create sounds with your family and have a fun story telling time! Hello everyone! I'm looking forward to singing "Merci mille fois" with you! The words are on the screen, but it is a well known song in our school! Can you think of other things you are grateful for? Add them in for the blank verses at the end! I had sooo much fun making this experience! Remember a while back when it was Earth Day, and I shared a wonderful outdoor musical scavenger hunt of finding the music of nature, from the amazing blog Artsplorers? I took their fun scavenger hunt page outside for a walk with my pup: ... And I recorded all of the sounds I created from their awesome list, and you can check them out in the experience below!! Go "for a walk" with Mme Jennifer, and listen to the cool sounds I found! Then, take the page and go find your own (in your own back yard) with your family! I didn't do "squelch" because I didn't want to step in mud, and didn't see any "squelchy" stuff haha! Go check it out: This composer, Diego Stocco, took the idea even further and composed with nature sounds! So fun: It was Mother's Day over the weekend! Happy Mother's Day! Bonjour, les amis! We are talking about soundtracks today! Here is a video I made for a film class I made at university years ago, called The Perfect Mother's Day, with lots of different changes in music to match the scenes! It's still one of my family's favourite videos, haha! Today I'm talking about soundtracks! The soundtrack to a movie is very important! Think of the opening of Star Wars and how the music is so connected to the movie! Here is a fun video that shows how different soundtracks can affect what you are seeing on a screen: The music really changes the scene, doesn't it?? So! Last week, for Mother's Day, I was dropping off a HUGE basket of yummy items from a bakery to my mom, and there was one of those GIANT dancing fellas for someone's birthday a couple of doors down! I recorded this scene for a little bit, and it is below! In Flipgrid, you will be asked to tell me what song should go with this dancing scene, and then I'll try to take some of your suggestions and make a video with them, and will share it here! Here is the dancing scene: It is Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you! Enjoy this amazing activity for Star Wars, learning about the important music connections throughout the movie, created by a talented tech music educator, Amy Burns! Just click on the image below!
