Over a week ago, I rode my bike to Bois-des-esprits... and I shared the sounds that I heard... because the music of nature is beautiful, and it is everywhere! There are many who make a career out of soundscape ecology, biophony, geophony; studying sounds in the environment around the world. Studying sounds in an area can help with understanding what is happening with the environment in different areas, so it is an important job! Later, I actually took my kayak there, and that had different sounds as well: This time, I went the OTHER direction on the St Vital trail, and went to Henteleff Park! It is a lovely place to visit with your family, and you would be able to get some exercise, and hear so many amazing sounds, like I did! The challenge this time, is to stay very still until the natural world around you starts to connect with you... birds and animals move closer so you can hear them... and when we are very still and in the moment, it is very much like we are a part of that space! What sounds do you hear when you go for a walk with family?
Have you visited Bois des Esprits? It is a beautiful space with many paths, with the Seine River running through it, and you can get to it by riding your bike with your family right from the St. Vital Trail next to the school! Seeing as it is Bike Everywhere Month, taking a bike ride with family may be a great idea. A wonderful organization, Save Our Seine, takes care of it, and has amazing initiatives like having a boat launch added, and trying to protect our park spaces in our city! Go check out their site here, by clicking on the picture below: Actually, wait a minute! What's this about the Butterflyway Project and Pollinator Week?? I have to contact them and find out more! We have a butterfly garden at the school! I visited Bois des Esprits this week, to hear all the sounds of the forest, and I made the video below so you could hear them, and see how fun it is to visit this lovely space! You can even create a sound map of all the different sounds you hear around you! Here is an excellent website with a short little video that explains how to make a sound map, which is the activity that I will be doing with students outside at school this week! Click HERE to read more about the sound map activity! What sounds do you hear outside on a walk with family? Al Simmons is one of my favourite Winnipeg Performers. Please go see him when you get a chance! For now, he has made a bunch of fun videos for you!! In collaboration with Safe at Home Manitoba, he has created SOUNDS CRAZY - The Science of Video Music Project. I will share the videos here for you to check out! Found Sounds!! Check out this photo of my family meeting Al Simmons! I know I'm not in the picture... I swear it's my family! Lol! Look at the little one! I'm the only other person on earth who makes that face haha! We've seen Al Simmons at KidsFest, Festival du Voyageur, Folkfest... so fun!!
I will try to find more photos in future posts, too, because we have other photos with him!! Skip on over to the Music Monday page by clicking the picture below! Music Monday is on Monday, May 3rd!
