Last year when it was Earth Day, I shared a wonderful outdoor musical scavenger hunt of finding the music of nature, from the amazing blog Artsplorers! Take the scavenger hunt page below, by clicking on the picture, and go on your own sound scavenger hunt with your family! Here is the nature walk that I did by myself, with my pup! She made some of the sounds too!! Go check out our nature sounds that we found!
A couple of weeks ago I shared the first few videos of Al Simmons Learning From Home videos, and here is the rest of the playlist! It`s all about the science of sound! We did experiments at school to think about different sounds around the school yard. This can be done absolutely anywhere, like your own kitchen or back yard! To check out what we did, skip over to 'Music Outside' in the menu above. But also, here is the rest of Al Simmon's playlist! Al Simmons and others will be performing at a special Drive In version of Kidsfest this coming weekend! Click on the picture below to find out more: I absolutely loved taking my kids to Kidsfest when they were little! Our city is amazing for special events for children such as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra`s Canada Life Kids Concerts series, all the fantastic shows at MTYP, the Kids Fringe, and the kids' tent and activities at Folkfest , special Folkfest for kids throughout the year, etc etc!
Here is a picture of my children again getting to meet Al Simmons as he shows them his super cool horse bike!! Probably not a lot of those around!! Over a week ago, I rode my bike to Bois-des-esprits... and I shared the sounds that I heard... because the music of nature is beautiful, and it is everywhere! There are many who make a career out of soundscape ecology, biophony, geophony; studying sounds in the environment around the world. Studying sounds in an area can help with understanding what is happening with the environment in different areas, so it is an important job! Later, I actually took my kayak there, and that had different sounds as well: This time, I went the OTHER direction on the St Vital trail, and went to Henteleff Park! It is a lovely place to visit with your family, and you would be able to get some exercise, and hear so many amazing sounds, like I did! The challenge this time, is to stay very still until the natural world around you starts to connect with you... birds and animals move closer so you can hear them... and when we are very still and in the moment, it is very much like we are a part of that space! What sounds do you hear when you go for a walk with family?
Have you visited Bois des Esprits? It is a beautiful space with many paths, with the Seine River running through it, and you can get to it by riding your bike with your family right from the St. Vital Trail next to the school! Seeing as it is Bike Everywhere Month, taking a bike ride with family may be a great idea. A wonderful organization, Save Our Seine, takes care of it, and has amazing initiatives like having a boat launch added, and trying to protect our park spaces in our city! Go check out their site here, by clicking on the picture below: Actually, wait a minute! What's this about the Butterflyway Project and Pollinator Week?? I have to contact them and find out more! We have a butterfly garden at the school! I visited Bois des Esprits this week, to hear all the sounds of the forest, and I made the video below so you could hear them, and see how fun it is to visit this lovely space! You can even create a sound map of all the different sounds you hear around you! Here is an excellent website with a short little video that explains how to make a sound map, which is the activity that I will be doing with students outside at school this week! Click HERE to read more about the sound map activity! What sounds do you hear outside on a walk with family? Al Simmons is one of my favourite Winnipeg Performers. Please go see him when you get a chance! For now, he has made a bunch of fun videos for you!! In collaboration with Safe at Home Manitoba, he has created SOUNDS CRAZY - The Science of Video Music Project. I will share the videos here for you to check out! Found Sounds!! Check out this photo of my family meeting Al Simmons! I know I'm not in the picture... I swear it's my family! Lol! Look at the little one! I'm the only other person on earth who makes that face haha! We've seen Al Simmons at KidsFest, Festival du Voyageur, Folkfest... so fun!!
I will try to find more photos in future posts, too, because we have other photos with him!! Skip on over to the Music Monday page by clicking the picture below! Music Monday is on Monday, May 3rd!
I updated the EnviroClub section of this website with some ideas and activities for Earth Day... Go check them out! Sing along with Mme Jennifer!
Just click on the picture below to go see! What is a listening walk? It is when we go outside and try to be aware of the sounds around us! The sounds can change with the seasons, the time of day... Check out this fantastic book about going on a listening walk! Some fantastic connections I have on social media have shared some birds to listen for in the spring! Thanks so much to Heather Hinam of Second Nature MB, and Terri Willard of the Seven Oaks Met School for their help! First, I learned last week that the chickadee call (chickadee-dee-dee) that we hear all winter actually CHANGES in the spring! I thought that was a totally new bird that arrives in the spring! ... Although now that I look at the Bird-Sounds.net site, it seems like what I'm calling the winter sound is the 'call' and what I'm calling the spring sound is the 'song'! So much to learn... Then there is one of my FAVOURITE bird songs, which is that of the White-Throated Sparrow! So glad this was shared with me as I didn't know who I was hearing!! Others I was told to check out are:
Merlin, Purple Finches, Nuthatches, Blue Jays, House Sparrows, Geese, Crows, Ravens... and I see Eagles all the time while teaching! It is almost time for Festival du Voyageur, and we have been talking about it in music class this week (and update - for a few weeks now that I'm editing this in February)! They will still be having modified activities and virtual events, as with so many wonderful arts and cultural events in our province! What I love to point out to students is that what I usually do with them is pretty much the same! We still will be doing so many French Canadian Folkdances, and even a new one that I will be creating for/with them! We learned how to dance the Red River Jig, and listened to the spoons. Would be fun to have them create their own jig dances to share with others while we dance outside! Want to try to practice the jig steps at home? Try it out with this fabulous video!! Here are some links for how to play the spoons, and how to make your own set at home! Here is an excellent version in French for how to make and play the spoons, with a little sing-a-long at the end! An incredible musician with the spoons! Here is another song or two that students could sing at home with their new homemade spoons! While we are at it, Festival du Voyageur has created some pretty excellent videos about how to celebrate FdV at home! So now that you have made your spoons (cuillères), get out your craft stuff and make some more instruments, with the help of an adult family member in your home! Want to know how to make your own snow sculptures? I personally skip past 1:04 and go right to 1:34 so that children are picking just garden tools, or perhaps they have plastic tools that could work too, to be safe... as this website says, always view this site with your parents: |
